As I reflect on my own journey through the creative industry, I remember the gems I learned along the way that helped me stay grounded and inspired. If you’re looking for a sign or a little direction, then this article is for you. Here are 6 gems I’ve learnt along my creative journey.

Don’t let anyone box you in (including yourself)

Your creativity is boundless, you can’t box in a gift that’s meant to be expressed. It’s a force that should be celebrated, so let it flow and open yourself up to experimenting outside of what you know. Make that bold move, try that new medium or technique, tap into your inner child and just have fun with it.

Trust your own opinion

You will be exposed to so many opinions, some that differ. Listen and take in what resonates with you. You’re not here to live for anyone else but yourself, so in the end, choose what’s best for you.

You can change direction. Who’s gonna stop you?

This is your path to light up - one that was destined for you. If you decide that you want to pivot into a different career, then go for it! Start with research. See if it's a match for you and whether you have any transferrable skills. Take it one step at a time.

Be your own advocate

We sometimes speak up for others more than we speak up for ourselves. But it’s important to advocate for no.1. Pour into yourself, ensuring that you know your needs and how they should be met. Whilst it can be difficult with barriers not limited to bias and fear of rejection, there’s no one that will express our needs better than ourselves.

My dad used to say “if you don’t ask… you don’t get” and it’s a saying that has stuck with me for good reason. Whatever you need to make your environment work for you, reach out to those that may be able to help. Be unapologetic about your own advocacy.

You can’t fulfil your purpose if you’re burnt out

In the pursuit of our purpose, we often find ourselves locked into the desire to achieve. Yet we overlook the fact that our own well-being is the fuel that keeps us going. Our true potential can be found not in pushing ourselves to the very edge, but by creating an external and internal space for our purpose to manifest and thrive. Rest is a necessity, not an afterthought.

Make space to create for you

Make space to create for you. Whatever your passion is outside of work, hold onto it with everything. This is a space where you can unmask and let yourself be. No restraints, deadlines or critiques. You need this!

Remember…

This is your journey. You’re doing this for you, so create room for the things that matter.
