6 Must-know gems to navigate your creative career

Whilst I’m still on my own journey within advertising and learning knew things everyday, there are gems I’ve discovered along the way that I want to share. Whether you’re stepping into graphic design, or reigniting your copywriting career, these tips will help make your journey a little easier and less daunting.
It’s okay to not know everything
Whilst it can feel like you’re expected to know so much, the journey is a process of learning. Some things take time to understand and master. If you’re unsure, ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable and confident. You don’t have to struggle in silence to prove anything to anyone.
Don’t let anyone choose your direction
You’re the Creative Director behind you own story, remember that your journey is your own. What worked for someone else may not work for you because that’s their path to take, not yours. Be open to explore everything until you feel at home.
Just because you’re at the start of your journey, doesn’t mean you have to settle for less
Once you know your worth, it will lead you to the right opportunities and block those that aren’t meant for you.
You’re going to hear a lot of Nos, but that’s okay
See it as a redirection to the path you’re defined to light up. It can feel like doors are constantly closing on you, it is hard, but in time you’ll find a space made for you and your creativity to thrive. Who knows…maybe you’ll go on to create spaces for yourself.
Don’t forget to network
Even if like me, you sometimes find in-person networking difficult, try an online event. Listen in, get involved when you feel comfortable and don’t forget to share your details in the chat! Check in with the people you connected with and keep your community growing. Platforms like @ilikenetworking and @_creativelives are great for finding networking events and other creative opportunities.
You can create your own luck
There have been times where I’ve shared personal projects on Instagram and have received commission requests and article features off the back of it. You really never know who’s watching.
You can also set your own briefs and create work for brands you love. Go on LinkedIn and see if you can find a creative director that works for the brand and try sending them a short PDF showcasing your work.
Also check out Instagram accounts like @enabrief and @brand.brief who share creative briefs that can help kick-start your portfolio.
Remember…
You’re on a journey. One with many things to experience and learn which can be scary, but also exciting. You’re doing this for you. You’ve got this!
