3 Opportunities to kickstart your career in advertising for free!

I stumbled into advertising when I was applying for every and any creative opportunity I came across. But, If you don’t know where to look, some of these gems are hard to find. I’ve got you though. Here are 3 unconventional and free ways to break into advertising.
D&AD New Blood Shift with Google
D&AD New Blood Shift is the programme that exposed me to the world of advertising. Now with Google as a partner, this free 5-month night school is here to help self-taught creatives propel their career into the advertising, design and creative world.
Taking place online and in person, you’ll learn from industry professionals, collaborate with creatives across fields, discover new agencies, work on client briefs and a final showcase to share your progress and make those connections. Did I mention it’s free?
For who: Open to all creatives based in London, New York, Sydney, Germany and São Paulo.
How to apply: Taking just 30 minutes, submit your application which includes you sharing 3 examples of your work. It can be a design, campaign, lyrics, story, anything that reflects you. You don’t need a portfolio to apply!
If shortlisted, you’ll be invited to a fun and interactive challenge day. The final cohort will then be selected. Follow @newblood_dandad to find out when applications are open for upcoming cohorts.
Brixton Finishing School
rixton Finishing School is an amazing platform that I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of, creating opportunities for creatives who often go overlooked toll take up space in advertising and marketing. With free online and in person courses designed to help you upskill and explore many roles within the creative industry, why not apply?
For who: There are a variety of courses available for 18-30 year olds and a course designed for women 45+ looking to start or restart their careers in the advertising industry.
How to apply: Each course has its own form so head to the Brixton Finishing School site, select the course that’s right for you and get applying!

SCA 2.0
The School of Communication Arts Stride Scholarship is another opportunity that helped refine my thinking and develop some of the skills I already built during D&AD New Blood Shift. SCA is a portfolio school where industry leaders become your mentors, working with you to build an award-winning portfolio. Don’t worry about grades, just share your authentic, creative self. With a portfolio day and advertising competitions to boost your visibility, this programme is great for putting you on a well-lit path.
For who: Creatives who live in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark or Wandsworth.
How to apply: Head to the SCA site to book a 15 minute call with SCA Dean, Marc Lewis to join an upcoming Selection Day.
Follow @sca2.0 to learn more and hear from past students.
I hope we all encounter opportunities that become catalysts, igniting our journeys. Good luck and don’t forget to follow these accounts to stay up to date on the next wave of cohorts!
