Don’t be grateful for crumbs

As creatives, we jump through so many hoops and over barriers to get where we are, only to receive crumbs? We’re not accepting that over here. Whether it’s a new job, freelancing role or brand collab, here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you’re fairly compensated.

You see their value, but do they see yours?

A brand you admire and love could approach you for a commission, but the fee is small and you’d have to give up all rights. Do you accept because it’s a brand you’ve always wanted to work with? Or do you decline the fee as it doesn't match what it would take for you to deliver the work? It’s a decision to sit on, but always ensure your worth is being fairly compensated. See if you can negotiate a higher rate or find a simpler solution for the current fee.

Experience is great but being paid to learn and work is better (and the bare minimum)

Placements and work experience ‘opportunities’ that don’t offer fair pay shouldn’t exist, especially when being able to afford a decent life is a human right. The experience may sound great and possibly lead to more opportunities, but is it really a fair exchange? The potential long-term benefits are just as important as the short-term so take both into consideration.

Don’t keep your worth quiet

Feel proud and confident within yourself and how far you’ve come. The skills you’ve learnt, the many times you’ve had to overcome a creative block, the late nights with endless ideas. You’re here and you did that, so be unapologetic when advocating for yourself. You’re the only one that knows your true value, so let them know what they’re really getting when working with you.

‘Money’ isn’t a bad word

Let’s throw away the idea that artists should be humble and avoid talking about money. We need to eat too. Our time, skills, tools all add up, so ensure these are factors that are taken in consideration when it comes to payment because it all adds up! Plus, you deserve the life that you want. So what if you have a figure or certain amount of sales you’d like to reach–It gives you a direction to strive towards.

Does it really align with you?

Take a minute to think about whether the opportunity really benefits you and gets you a step closer to the vision you have. Does it bring you joy and fill you with excitement when you think about it, or does it make you feel anxious? If your inner self isn’t happy and at rest then thats no space for your greatness to exist.

Remember…

Don’t settle for anything less than what you deserve. You’re worth more than you think!
